The 9th-grade class welcomed two new students to their class this year, expanding their friendships and collegiality. They recently finished a close read of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar with Mrs. Riddell and considered themes of ambition, loyalty, and persuasion. In the context of this play, they memorized and recited Marc Antony’s Funeral Oration to continue developing their public speaking and presentation skills. Next up! The Merchant of Venice.

Under the guidance of Mr. Garrison in Classical Studies, 9th grade completed their reading of Virgil’s Aeneid, one of the five great works in the Western Canon. Now they are studying political philosophy in Cicero’s On Obligations. In European History I, Mr. Cutrona is guiding the students through the years A.D. 800-1815, which takes them from Charlemagne to Napoleon. This vast swath of history is made more accessible by the students’ previous study of Ancient Greece and Rome, which lays the foundation for developments in Europe. In Christian Studies, 9th grade is learning about the growth of the early Christian church, which follows their reading of Acts in 8th grade and intertwines with their European History studies. All 9th graders continue their studies in mathematics, science, and Latin and are progressing well.

On Thursdays, the students have enjoyed gathering in their Houses to compete against one another in various sports as well as planning upcoming House socials and service projects. These activities give opportunities to foster friendships and promote leadership skills in the Upper School.
