An interview with Andrew Garrison, an HLS Upper School Teacher

Where did you attend school?

I went to West Bay Christian Academy in North Kingstown, RI through the first grade. When our family moved to Indiana in 1994, I began attending Heritage Christian School which is where I graduated. I never really knew what I wanted to do when I grew up. After high school, I attended Indiana Wesleyan University and graduated with a B.A. in history and Biblical literature. I went back to IWU after a year and received my second degree in social studies education. I taught at a couple of schools before starting at HLS in the fall of 2013.

Is there a particular memory that stands out for you when you were a student?

I had a wonderful time at Heritage and IWU and look back at my time with fondness. I had a particularly great time in the orchestra at Heritage where I played the violin. At the time, it was just an extra-curricular thing I did. Looking back though, I had a wonderful time and learned a lot from that experience. I also had the opportunity to go on two mission trips to Japan and Hungary.

What attracted you to HLS and what have you learned about yourself after working for this school? What inspires you?

Initially, what attracted me to the school was the prospect of a job. Since teaching for seven years at HLS though, I have come to appreciate the educational freedom that the families have as well as the unique classical style of education they receive.

What do you want HLS parents to know about you? What are your hobbies, interests, passions?

I enjoy reading in the summer and when I can find time during the school year. I enjoy playing hobby board games and try to have a game night once or twice a month at my house. In the last few years, I have come to enjoy learning about and appreciate economics, specifically the Austrian school. I also enjoy spending time with my wife and two kids. We enjoy taking mini-vacations to places like Great Wolf Lodge.

What would you say to someone considering sending their children to HLS?

HLS is a wonderful alternative to public school. It has a rigorous program and high expectations that, in the end, will result in a well-rounded, fully educated student. Not only does this school excel at teaching academics but it also helps to foster a Christ-centered community among the students.
