The goal of the HLS art program is to build an appreciation for art and art history and to acknowledge and develop the creativity of every child. Students will be introduced to a variety of art mediums and will learn to identify, imitate, and appreciate the various elements of art, including line, shape, color, value, texture, space, and form.
In the Primary Grades (K-2), students focus more on the process than the product. Projects are fun and designed to teach students to use art tools and experiments. Focus will be on the first four elements of art, line shape, color, and value. Basic art vocabulary and history is integrated into lessons, building the foundation for future art study. In this stage, students should learn to be comfortable with art supplies and proud of their work.
In 3rd-6th grades, students will continue to develop their use of the elements of art by adding the last three elements of art (space, form, and value). Students at this level will continue to build a language of art and knowledge of art history.
Individual art courses will be offered as an elective to upper school students in 7th-12th grade. Seniors take a capstone course in art and architecture of Western Civilization.
