Getting to know Coach McCann

An Interview with Coach McCann, HLS Head Boys Basketball Coach

Coach Wade McCann is heading up Highlands’ boys basketball team, which is in its first year. Coach McCann comes to Highlands with experience coaching at several levels, including JV basketball Head Coach and Varsity Assistant at Grand Ledge High School and Bethesda Christian.

Coach McCann is married to Dr. Meagan McCann and they have two children, Audra (4) and Nolan (1). The McCanns have lived in Carmel since 2018. Dr. McCann is an ER physician for St. Vincent hospitals. Coach McCann’s background includes work in tissue banking and supervising university lab operations, but currently, he is staying at home to raise Audra and Nolan. The McCanns are involved with Genesis Church in Carmel and serve as small group leaders there.

“My coaching philosophy is to help the individual maximize their ability in the sport, while using basketball to build character,” shared Coach McCann. This desire to build character fits in perfectly at Highlands, where we desire to build up the whole person, contributing to strong minds and also developing Christian character.

Coach is working with our basketball players toward the following goals for the 2021-22 season: 

Develop Individually for Each Other

- Work to improve individual basketball skills

- Play for the team’s needs

- Confidently know what to do and how to do it

Play with an Edge

- Compete in every play no matter the situation of the game

- Be mentally, physically, and emotionally tough

- Give relentless, aggressive efforts

Pick Up Our Trash

- Leave people and places better than we found them

- Respect and value others making this possible

- Be viewed as warriors on the court and gentlemen off it
